How the document workflow works
Choose your tool
Find the task you need and review its formats and limits. Browser tools need no account.
Select and configure
Choose supported files, review their order and set the page range or other options.
Create your PDF
Processing runs in a cancellable browser Worker. Files that exceed the safety limits or supported PDF subset are rejected.
Check your result
Download appears after the output has been created and validated. Keep your originals and inspect the result.
Supported files and limits
Core tools accept PDF, JPG/JPEG and PNG files, depending on the operation. Browser tool inputs are structurally inspected on your device; a familiar filename or extension does not guarantee a valid document.
Merge PDF accepts up to five PDFs, 10 MB each and 20 MB combined, with at most 20 pages and a 24 MB result. Other PDF tools, including lossless Compress PDF, accept a PDF up to 4 MB and 20 pages, with up to 2 MiB of combined results. MB limits use 1,000,000 bytes; 2 MiB is 2,097,152 bytes. Image conversion and OCR also have stricter image, pixel and selected-page limits shown in their workspaces.
When processing is available, each tool displays its file size, page count, image dimensions and output limits. These are checked separately. A file can pass the initial check and still produce a result that exceeds an output limit.
When enabled, browser OCR supports English and German printed text; recognition can be wrong and must be reviewed. Searchable PDF rasterizes selected pages and adds a text layer. Office to PDF is Coming Later and cannot accept files. Text-only Word export extracts readable text; it does not recreate the original page layout.
Browse PDF toolsPassword-protected PDFs
Supported classic AES-256 revision 6 PDFs open an owner-password dialog in the selected tool. Confirm your permission to modify the document, enter the owner password and choose Unlock & Continue. Then choose the tool’s processing action separately. An opening password alone cannot authorize this workflow; older or unsupported encryption is rejected.
Passwords stay in this tab and its processing Worker, and are cleared after each attempt. Cancel or Escape closes the dialog; it also expires after 60 seconds. The original file stays unchanged. The unlocked working copy is temporary: removal, Delete now, navigation, reload or 15-minute expiry releases it.
Ordinary metadata and validated page transitions are supported. Scripts, forms, attachments and digital signatures remain outside the supported subset. PDFLane never executes embedded JavaScript or silently removes these structures to admit a file. Merge keeps document metadata from its first source; page selection tools preserve supported metadata even when selected pages change.
Browser support and mobile testing
Desktop Chromium and Microsoft Edge have passed our automated processing and download checks. The owner has confirmed working use on physical Android, Safari and Firefox. These owner checks are separate from the automated suite; detailed device versions and per-tool evidence were not independently recorded.
Previews, image conversion and OCR need canvas rendering inside a Web Worker. Windows WebKit testing has exposed a missing Worker canvas capability; that result does not establish how actual iPhone Safari behaves. If rendering is unavailable, the tool reports a failure instead of sending your document elsewhere.
Try a small, non-sensitive sample first. Confirm file selection, preview, processing and opening the download in a PDF reader before relying on a workflow. If an optional result preview fails, use Download when it remains available.
When a task needs attention
- A file is rejected
- Check its type, size and selected pages. Malformed documents and unsupported encryption are rejected. Only unlock a file when you have the required password and permission to modify it.
- A tool is processing
- Wait for the browser Worker or use Cancel. A timeout stops the Worker.
- A task fails or is cancelled
- Read the safe error message and correct the cause before trying again. Cancellation stops further browser processing but cannot undo a file you already downloaded.
- A result is no longer available
- Temporary results expire after 15 minutes and are discarded when you leave or reload the page. Keep your original and downloaded copies; Delete now removes this tab’s result copies.
Know what editing changes
The editor adds overlays and supported annotations. It does not edit underlying text, perform secure redaction or create cryptographic digital signatures. Compression does not guarantee a smaller file. Always inspect exported documents.
