Supported files & details

One PDF up to 4 MB (4,000,000 bytes) and 20 pages. One validated PDF result up to 2 MiB (2,097,152 bytes). Optional original and result rendering has its own 2 MB limit; Download remains available when review is unavailable.

Lossless stream compression and identical-stream reuse preserve supported content, image quality, metadata, annotations and page geometry. No quality presets or image downsampling. If rewriting saves no bytes, the validated original input is returned unchanged.

Supported classic AES-256 revision 6 files continue here with the owner password. Opening-only passwords, forms, scripts, attachments, signatures and other unsupported structures are refused. Processing is local; results and unlocked copies expire after 15 minutes. Delete now, navigation and reload clear tab-owned results.

How lossless PDF compression works

PDFLane rewrites supported streams and removes duplicate stream objects. It compares the actual result size and returns the original when rewriting does not save bytes.

  • An already optimized PDF may not become smaller. That is a valid result.
  • This tool does not downsample photographs or promise a particular percentage reduction.

Common questions

Why did the file size stay the same?

The original is returned when the attempted lossless rewrite is not smaller. Some PDFs are already compact.

Can I choose a lower-quality compression level?

No. This tool offers bounded lossless processing rather than image-quality settings. Use the source application to export lower-resolution images when necessary.

Can I guarantee a file under a particular size?

No. Compress accepts one supported PDF up to 4 MB and 20 pages, with a result up to 2 MiB. It cannot guarantee a smaller file or a target such as 100 KB. Merge's larger input allowance does not apply here.
