A practical PDFLane guide

How to merge PDFs without uploading them

PDFLane merges supported PDFs in your browser without uploading their document bytes. Arrange the files first, create the merged PDF, then download and open it to check the page order.

What browser-local merging means

The website loads pages, scripts, fonts and processing assets from its host. Once you choose supported PDFs, their document bytes are processed in this browser tab and its Workers. PDFLane does not send those bytes to a PDF-processing server.

This is not a promise of zero network requests, complete anonymity or offline availability. Loading the site still contacts its host. Follow your organisation’s rules for sensitive documents; a local workflow is not a security certification. The privacy notice explains the hosting and document boundary.

Try the workshop example

Imagine putting a cover in front of a short workshop programme. Our first practice file contains pages A1 and A2. The second contains B1. The filenames identify the documents; the large printed labels identify the actual pages.

  1. Open Merge PDF and choose the two downloaded practice files. You can use the native file picker; dragging files is optional.
  2. Put B above A. Use the Move up and Move down buttons, including by keyboard or touch, or drag the file cards. Check the filenames before continuing.
  3. Choose Merge PDFs. Wait for the validated result, then choose Download PDF.

Illustration of the independently inspected download: B1, A1, A2. The actual three-page PDF was 4,582 bytes in this synthetic run. The cards illustrate page order; they are not screenshots or live previews.

Merge joins whole documents in file order. It keeps each document’s internal page sequence. To move an individual page, use Organize PDF on a supported file. A Merge download can exceed Organize’s smaller input allowance, so check the next tool’s limits before starting another task.

Check the download

The optional file thumbnails show the first page of each original document. Moving the cards proposes an order; neither the thumbnails nor the card arrangement prove what was exported.

Merge currently provides Download rather than an actual-result preview panel. Open the downloaded PDF in a trusted reader. Check that B1 is first, A1 second and A2 third. For your own files, also inspect page count, orientation, page sizes and any important links. Merge does not make mixed-size pages all A4 or Letter. Supported document metadata comes from the first source.

Keep the originals until this check is complete. A tutorial link does not move a selected file into another tool; download and choose your local copy when needed.

Limits and rejected files

Merge accepts 5 PDFs at most, up to 10 MB each and 20 MB combined, with 20 pages combined. Its output ceiling is 24 MB. Here MB means 1,000,000 bytes. These larger limits apply to Merge, not to every PDFLane tool.

Size is only one admission check. Damaged files, unsupported structures, scripts, forms, attachments and digital signatures can prevent processing. Some legitimate PDFs are outside the supported subset. Renaming a file does not make it a supported PDF.

For supported encryption, the owner-password workflow also requires permission to modify the document. An opening password alone does not authorise this operation. PDFLane does not crack passwords or silently remove unsupported content. Read password and supported-document guidance if a file is refused.

Practical questions

Does Delete now remove my download?

No. Delete now releases this tab’s temporary result and working copies. A file already downloaded remains on your device. Temporary results expire after 15 minutes, and leaving or reloading the tool discards them.

What if the preview cannot load?

A preview has its own smaller resource budget. An unavailable original thumbnail does not establish that the PDF cannot be merged. Use an available Download and check the resulting PDF independently. See browser support and preview requirements before relying on an untested device.

The practice examples use synthetic documents and were checked against PDFLane source 0005122 in desktop Chromium. They are examples, not guarantees for every document. See current browser support.

Keep your originals. For a problem with a tool, contact PDFLane without sending sensitive documents or passwords. Read the document privacy notice.
