Choose the output you need
Start with the number of files you want to receive. Sending two separate sections to different people calls for Split. Keeping a few useful pages together as a single handout calls for Extract Pages.
| Your task | Choose | Downloaded result |
|---|---|---|
| Separate sections | Split: 1-2, 5-6 | Two PDFs: pages 1, 2 and pages 5, 6 |
| One reordered selection | Extract: 5, 1-2 | One PDF: pages 5, 1, 2 |
Page numbers here mean positions in the source PDF, starting at 1. A printed chapter number or cover label can differ. Check the original before entering a range.
Make two PDFs with Split
Our practice packet has six visibly numbered pages and a simple internal link from page 1 to page 2. It contains no personal information.
- Open Split PDF and choose the practice packet.
- Use Split by ranges. Enter
1-2, 5-6in Page ranges and choose Apply ranges. Each comma-separated range becomes a separate output. - Review the plan, choose Split PDF and download both PDFs individually. Open each file to check its page labels.
Download 1
Download 2
The Every page separately mode makes one PDF per source page when the document and links allow it. Split provides separate download buttons; do not expect a ZIP archive or splitting to a target number of kilobytes.
Make one PDF with Extract
- Open Extract Pages and choose the same packet.
- Enter
5, 1-2in Pages, then choose Apply page numbers. Review the proposed sequence before processing. - Choose Extract pages, download the one result and check that its pages read 5, 1, 2.
Our inspected three-page result retains the link on original page 1, now the second output page. Its destination is original page 2, now the third output page. Moving the pages did not turn that link into a link to the old positional number.
Optional thumbnails help identify original pages. Visual selection and the numeric controls describe a proposed selection; the download is the final evidence. If the actual-result review is available, it previews the exported bytes, not the original. You can still use Download when an optional preview fails.
For rotations and removal with undo, use Organize PDF. Page duplication is unavailable; these guides do not propose it as a way to repeat a page.
Links, ranges and limits
A source PDF can be up to 4 MB and 20 pages. Results together must fit within 2,097,152 bytes (2 MiB). Passing the input checks does not guarantee that the exported result will fit. Keep the original and review every download.
Split allows at most 20 outputs and 20 exported pages in total. Overlapping ranges count their pages again. For example, 1-2, 1-2 creates two separate two-page outputs and uses four exported pages. It is not an unlimited batch operation.
Keep linked pages in the same output. In our second check, splitting only page 1 was refused because its link pointed to omitted page 2. No partial download was offered. Preserving that link safely required keeping its destination. This does not establish support for arbitrary annotations, bookmarks, forms or active PDF features.
Correct an invalid range or choose a supported selection; do not assume an error silently removes links. The Help limits and document guidance explain the shared admission rules.
Practical questions
Is Extract Pages the same as Extract Text?
No. Extract Pages creates a PDF containing selected pages, including their supported page content. Extract Text saves existing selectable text as a TXT file. A page that looks like text can instead be an image, which needs a supported OCR workflow.
Does this edit my original PDF?
No. The tool creates new downloads. Keep your original, verify every output and use Delete now when finished. Temporary results expire after 15 minutes; downloaded copies remain on your device.
The practice examples use synthetic documents and were checked against PDFLane source 0005122 in desktop Chromium. They are examples, not guarantees for every document. See current browser support.
