How to password protect a PDF

Use an opening password for reading and a different owner password for changing protection. PDFLane creates a supported AES-256 encrypted PDF locally.

  • Store the owner password privately. It is required by PDFLane to unlock this file later.
  • New passwords need 9–32 characters and must fit the format’s 127 UTF-8-byte limit.

Common questions

Will PDFLane remember my passwords?

Passwords are supplied to the tab and its Worker for this request, then cleared from the form after processing. There is no account or password recovery service.

Is the owner password the same as the opening password?

They must be different. Giving someone the opening password lets them read the document; keep the owner password privately.
